IGMC and RI Profile :
The Union Territory of Puducherry, with a population of nearly 1,250, 000, was at one time dependent for medical education and tertiary level medical care solely on JIPMER, which being a central institute offers limited seats for local candidates. Though there are several private medical colleges in and around Puducherry, their fees are beyond the reach of the common man. Hence the territorial government decided to start a medical college of its own to provide better opportunity for students from Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe and Yanam. Therefore in the Annual Plan of 1997-98, the Government of Puducherry proposed to establish a Medical College at Puducherry. Approval of the Planning Commission of India was then obtained to establish the College in the Union Territory of Puducherry by registering a society called the Pondicherry Medical College Society, later renamed as Perunthalaivar Kamaraj Medical College Society. In 2010 the college, now called Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMC&RI) was granted permission by the Medical Council of India to enrol 150 medical students annually.
Currently there are two batches of students pursuing the MBBS degree. The first batch scored a pass percentage of 92.31% in the first professional exam, with 13 distinctions in Physiology, 9 in Anatomy and 21 distinctions in Biochemistry.
The College has a sprawling campus located centrally in the city of Puducherry. There are air-conditioned Lecture theatres with state-of the art audio-visual aids on each floor of the college. Within a few months of opening, the hospital OPD attendance crossed the 1000 patients per day mark. There are separate hostels for boys and girls, each hostel equipped with a gym, reading and recreation rooms. Bath attached rooms are available for NRI students. Badminton and volley ball courts are attached to the hostels and it is proposed to have a cricket stadium and swimming pool of international standards.
In the near future, with its team of dedicated doctors, nurses, and other staff from all over the country, IGMC & RI will be on its way to becoming a centre of excellence in medical education and health care.
